Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar square is the official centre of london.  It is the modern day square that was built around Charing Cross.  Charing cross is the point from which all of the distances in London are measured, or in more modern day terms, if you type ‘London’ onto google maps, the pin will point to this spot.  It is the convergence of six routes, and formerly the site of one of the 12 Eleanor Crosses, the memorial monuments erected by King Edward the 1st for Queen Eleanor of Castile in 1291. Trafalgar Square was named in honour of the battle of Trafalgar, where The British Navy defeated the combined powers of the French and Spanish Navies on the 21st of October, 1805.  In the centre of Trafalgar square is Nelson’s column, on which stands a statue of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, who was killed at the battle after he’d found out that his unorthodox tactics won them the battle. Trafalgar square was once famous for its huge pigeon population, so dense that their poo was not only covering all the monuments, but corroding them! To combat this, it is illegal to feed pigeons in Trafalgar Square, and if you were caught doing so, you could be hit with a whopping £500 pound fine.  There are also teams of falconers who use highly trained birds of prey to scare the pigeons off. It could well be the only job in London cooler than tour guiding.
